Libraries across Bridgend County Borough are inviting the local community to celebrate the National Day of Reading in Wales on Thursday 24 September, with free cake, reading sessions and a warm welcome for everyone who wants to rediscover the simple joy of a good story.
Part of the National Year of Reading 2026 campaign, the day is about encouraging more people to make reading part of everyday life; not as something formal or pressured, but as something enjoyable, inspiring and connected to the things people already love.
Reading has so many benefits. It can expand minds, build confidence, spark imagination and fuel creativity. But with busy lives, digital distractions and less time to pause, reading for pleasure is in decline across many age-groups.
The National Day of Reading in Wales, and the UK-wide campaign, provide a chance to change that, by reminding people that reading or listening to an audiobook can be sociable, relaxing, exciting and for everyone.
Throughout the day, Awen Libraries will be hosting reading sessions designed to bring people together and celebrate the power of books, stories and shared experiences. Whether you are a regular library user, someone who has not picked up a book in a while, or a family looking for a free and friendly activity, there will be something to enjoy.
There will also be free adult and children’s books available for visitors to borrow from Bryngarw Country Park’s visitor centre and cafe. Visitors can return them after their visit or take them home and return to their local library at a later date.
The theme of the National Year of Reading is about helping people “Go All In” by connecting reading with their passions. That might be sport, music, food, gaming, film, fashion, creativity, or anything else that captures the imagination. The message is simple: reading is not separate from culture; it is at the heart of it.
Awen Libraries are proud to support initiatives aimed at helping people across local communities find new ways into reading and reminding everyone that libraries are welcoming spaces to explore, learn, connect and be inspired.
So, on Thursday 24th September, why not call into your local Awen library, enjoy a slice of cake, join a reading session and discover where reading might take you next?
