Awen Cultural Trust will launch the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge and Awen Libraries’ summer programme of activities with a fun-filled, family event at Newbridge Fields in Bridgend on Saturday 4th July from 12 – 3pm. The event is supported by Bridgend County Borough Council.
‘Fun in the Park’ will include movement and dance sessions with Zack Franks, soft play with R & B Inflatables, crafts and stories with the Awen Libraries team, giant games and sunflower seed planting. All activities are provided free of charge.
Awen Libraries staff will be on hand to help children, and their parents, grandparents or carers, sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s theme is ‘Read to the Beat!’, celebrating the joy of music and the power it has to move, inspire, and connect us – all through the magic of reading.
Children who are usually aged between 4 and 11 years old (but older and younger people are welcome to participate too) are encouraged to read six or more library books during the school summer holidays, to earn rewards including stickers, medals and certificates.
It is hoped that this year’s theme will bring a fun, musical twist to reading, inspiring children to explore how stories and songs can both ignite imagination and creativity. It is supported by the Universal Music Group, the world’s leading music company.
Reading for pleasure among children in Wales has fallen sharply in recent years. According to the National Literacy Trust, only 37% of children and young people aged 8 to 18 say they enjoy reading in their free time. Daily reading habits are even lower with just 12.5% reading every day.
Richard Hughes, Chief Executive of Awen Cultural Trust, said:
“Reading for pleasure plays a vital role in children’s development. It’s linked to a range of benefits including stronger writing skills, improved wellbeing and confidence, and even higher future earnings. The Summer Reading Challenge helps ensure that learning doesn’t stop when the school term ends.
“By encouraging children to read regularly over the summer, and rewarding their commitment, we’re supporting their confidence, creativity and future success. It’s free, accessible and a brilliant way for families to enjoy their local library together.”
Following the launch, libraries across Bridgend County Borough will run a programme of free events including African drumming, coding sessions, Bollywood dance experiences, silent discos, drawing workshops, and movement and dance activities.
There will also be weekly Story and Craft sessions at Y Nyth in Bryngarw Country Park, every Tuesday and Thursday at 10am, 12pm and 2pm from 21st July until 13th August. These sessions will need to be pre-booked via www.awenboxoffice.com as spaces are free but limited.
The Summer Reading Challenge in Wales is supported by Welsh Government and Books Council of Wales.
