‘Welsh Not’ History talk with Martin Johnes (Bridgend Library)

In this History Talk, Professor Martin Johnes shares his research on the use of Welsh language in Victorian schools in Wales. He will elaborate on the punishments for speaking Welsh in class, such as the ‘Welsh Not’, but will also explain how those punishments hindered Welsh children learning English.
